 In 2003 the IBeam Typography Project asked us to create our own font. We sent a message to various e-lists requesting people to nominate a letter or a number from a published fictional text, a novel or short story. The character had to be located in the single word on which, for that reader at least, the entire text hung, the very crux of the story. We asked for a few lines on why the reader had chosen that specific moment in the text and for the publication details of the book in which it is found. The IBeam team then, armed with hand scanners, trawled libraries and bookshops in search of the nominated characters.
